Professional coaching is a growing, research-based practice in higher education. As the book Transformative Coaching for Faculty and Staff in Higher Education (Routledge, 2026) explains, coaching meets an important need: to provide high-potential faculty and staff with vital support as they grow into leadership roles, learn to manage complex problems, and develop personal confidence and resilience.
Dedicating professional development funds for valued employees to partner with a professional coach demonstrates genuine commitment to their wellbeing. It’s an investment in institutional culture and organizational effectiveness. It also recognizes that higher education faculty and staff model mindsets and behaviors for our students. We must attend to our inner lives and seek self-awareness to do important relational work with the students who entrust to us their own educational development.
AI is taking over transactional coaching: surface-level conversations that solve an immediate problem. But one-on-one, personal coaching addresses deeper developmental challenges: not just goal setting but the motivation behind the ambition; not just decision-making but the stakes underneath the choices; not just task-management but the values reflected by priorities.
